Does anyone still operate a bonus/award system for attending work fully without any sickness absence?  If so, how does it operate and how is it received by employees etc?

We operate a system where by if an employee successfully completed for example 2006 without any sickness at all they receive an additional two days holiday to be used in 2007. It has proved to be popular and on occasion some people have converted sickness to holiday at the end of the year in order to gain 2 further holiday days in the next year.

In my experience this can cause friction in the workforce, because people who are diagnosed with long-term/terminal illness that do not have the option of being at work during certain stages of their conditions, this leads them to feel discriminated against due to the nature of their illness. Unless you are prepared to look at individual circumstances I personally feel that this is not always a good option to improve attedance.

Does anyone offer any other kind of incentive for good attendance?

We were considering either a payment or additional holiday but we are struggling to set the parimeters for qualification. Surely we need to careful of anyone suffering from a disability, those that work full time hours who may struggle to make appointments outside of working hours, etc.

I am keen, in the first instance to tighten up on our absence monitoring system before considering any incentive but I need some ideas going forward to present to the MD

Many thanks

Hi Gemma,

Did you get any further suggestions about the sickness monitoring? Our sickness is going up and up and I wondered if you had found ways to reduce your sickness levels?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Isaac

When I was a serving Met Police officer and saw blatant abuse of the self - certificated sick leave facility I suggested that those malingerers who were ambitious for promotion could have their minds concentrated wonderfully if their attendance record was a factor to be considered in promotion decisions. This suggestion was ignored for about 12 years until 1998 when the annual cost of Met Police sick leave hit £96m! Then the policy was adopted of considering sickness records of applicants for promotion. The annual cost of Met sick leave is now £36m!
