Hi!

I am looking to undertake a Project Management course to advance my career opportunities having worked in the IT industry for over 12 years within the Banking sector.

What would you guys say would be the best way forward - a Prince 2 course or the APM course?

I am leaning towards Prince 2 but am not sure about its popularity.

Any advice or help on this would be helpful.

My advice to you would be to ignore all the certification schemes. They do not add any value and are not taken seriously by employers who know anything about project management. After all consider what the PMP test consists of - a bunch of multiple choice questions! How could that possibly test the type of knowledge required to run a project. I wouldn’t employ anyone who showed any signs of taking these things seriously or who considered them a measure of competency.

Best thing to do would be to get some PM experience by either doing some projects at work or maybe even going to work in the programme/project office for a while.

Yeah I understand what your saying, I’m in the same predicament right now, is trying to do the same thing, but I’m more of a rookie and I'm trying to get more information on Prince 2 and APM courses, post if u get any responses

Hi;
In my humble opinion, Prince 2 is more popular in Europe where as PMP certification is gaining popularity in North America and other countries even now even in Europe. So I would go for PMP.

Hi David,

I agree with Eric, in the respect that becoming a Prince 2 Practitioner is useless without experience. But it is hard to gain experience without some knowledge. It is a real 'chicken and egg' situation. I would recommend attending an Introductory Project Management course and then gain experience by getting a job or contract as a Project Administrator or Co-ordinator. Whilst in the role, it will be up to you to prove to your employers that you have what it takes to take the next step up to become a Junior Project Manager.
