A few days ago, Tesco fitted energy saving curtains in the backup freezer and chillers. In these few days we have had two minor accidents, several near misses and loads of complaints. I spoke with the complaining staff to see if it was just a moan about something new that they should get use to. I then went to have a look and someone demostrated what happens. When cages etc. are pulled in or out, the top tray gets caught and if not prevented, topples over. They are not like the usuall white curtains found in the backup freezers, they are thicker strips with a clear plastic window and not so flexible.

I've asked another rep to have a word with the manager (because he's on nights this week) What option I take, will depend on his comments!!!

Is anyone having the same problem, if so, has anything been done about it?

we have them too in our store our freezer has a slope i work on Dot com and pushing dollys with trays in is a dangerouse thing because of a slope that we have at the entrance so the trays tend to get cought and topple over we are told that we have changes to our store coming up either rebuild or renovation and nothing will be done because they are seen as ok basicaly they dont want to spend money we havn`t had any reported accidents as of yet

we have also had these curtains installed in our store and the people who work in the chiller have also complained about them.we have had a few near misses but no accidents as yet.the problem seems to be that when pulling cages out of the chiller they cannot see if anyone is on the other side as there is poor visibility because of the small windows.they are also heavier and difficult to get through when pulling a cage.

Hi there,

Have you tried asking your manager to walk through the curtains with a loaded cage?
And see what he/she thinks?

It seems to me that you need to make this operation a two person operation, One to hold the curtain and check to see if the wayfare is clear and the other to push the cage through

Thanks to everyone who gave a reply to my post about the problems with the above. Thought you might be interested to know that there has been alot of complaints about them and they are being phased out,no doubt to be replaced by some other!!! After giving the manager a HS2 form the manager contacted the energy saving chap,Tony Atkins who confirmed that they could be removed. Hence I left a message for our I.S.T. who cut them down the next day so they have all been removed. Success. Hopefully if you enquire you might find the same applies. According to a member of the management team there was a similar curtain years ago that had to be removed due to safety issues.

Thanks again, I think this H/S discussion forum is a great help.

I totally agree with your complaints on these camiczie curtains my work force as cuts and bruses and even some of the ssmaller staff can not see through them especally if they pullling cages as trained to do so.
my first action as an HS rep was to ask for the the risk assessment. after 6 weeks I was told by the coordinator that Tesco do not do risk assemments. I showed the union rep my risk assessment of the doors and it was slipped aside. pushing this further to envormenal health said that there ws nothing wrong with the doors but the next week I was told that Tesco were to replace the door with a thiner strip dooor flaps. do your store do risk assemnts
