As web-based applications become central to the work of many non-profit organisations, the issue of web hosting becomes extremely important. This topic is intended to address that by sharing experience of web hosting, both good and bad.

For good value, I've been impressed by Pipex webfusion (www.webfusion.co.uk). For good-value dedicated hosting I've seen lots of recommendations for Bytemark (www.bytemark.co.uk). For enterprise-level hosting Rackspace (www.rackspace.com) are worth checking.

I've used names.co.uk for years now and host several sites with them. Their support is good, they're not expensive, and the hosting control panel is easy to use with all the options you'd expect to see. Frequently when I'm working on clients' websites I get frustrated with what's missing from their hosting company's domain control panels.

I'd only recommend the biggest hosting companies: they got big by doing it well. And I reckon charities should always buy the domain/hosting themselves and not leave it to the web designer.

Couldn't agree more re organisations buying the domain name themselves. It's pretty straightforward. Certainly ensure the domain is registered in the organisation's name rather than the designer or developer's.

There are loads of web hosting companies out there and it can be difficult to decide between them so it's good to hear other people's experiences. The host / hosting package to choose will depend on what it is you want / need to do with your website now and in the future so that should be the starting point.

I used HostingFest. It's relatively cheap and does everything I need. They've got quite a versatile range.

You could also look at Cyber Siouxland. They've don't cost the Earth either.
